Seventeen-year-old Jason Mick spoke at a youth group event at his home church in Bountiful, Utah, and felt the call to ministry in that moment.
It just took him a while to figure out how to respond.
“I didn’t know how to answer that call,” he said. “I just knew at that point I wanted to go to school at Oklahoma State University. Then after that I went to work for IBM and I served at Life Church in Tulsa, working with youth.”
But he was already taking the first steps in a journey that took him from Tulsa to suburban Houston and now to Prestonwood Baptist Church, where he will serve as Minister to Students. He has no doubt each move has been orchestrated by God.
While still at OSU, Jason was invited by a college friend who served on staff at Second Baptist Houston to “come down to be a college helper on two occasions.”
The folks at Second Baptist liked Jason and his heart for students, and in February 2006, they offered him a job.
“But I said ‘no’ because I’d already given my word to IBM,” Jason said. “Then I went back the next year and they offered me a job again.”
This time Jason said yes.
In May 2007, he began serving as a Junior High School Associate Minister at the church’s Woodway Campus. During his time there, Jason met Erin, who would become his wife.
In 2009, the Micks moved to Second Baptist’s North Campus in Kingwood, where Jason served as Junior High Pastor for eight years, and High School Pastor for a little over a year. They were settled in and happy.
“Then Prestonwood came calling,” Jason said.
Jason knew Shawn Callander, Minister of Marriage and Family Life, from when Shawn served at Second Baptist.
“He reached out on Jeff Young’s behalf to see if I’d be interested in talking,” Jason said. “I had visited Prestonwood a couple of times—my best friend and his wife attended the North Campus—so I said yes.”
Minister of Spiritual Development Jeff Young said Jason was one of 30 candidates from nine states and one foreign country who interviewed for the position.
“It was clear pretty quickly that we had 20 legitimate possibilities,” Jeff said, but Jason stood out.
“I think with the overwhelming possibilities and opportunities that Prestonwood provides, you need a leader who is aggressive and seizes those opportunities,” Jeff said. “You need someone who has people-building skills and someone who can communicate with the kids.”
Jason said he wasn’t looking for a job when Prestonwood came calling. But he was certain it was God’s will for him and his family.
“One of the biggest things in this is I wasn’t sending out my resume,” he said. “I’m a firm believer in waiting for God to call.”
Jason and Erin have four children: Joshua, 7; Annaleigh, 5; Elizabeth, 3; and Joanna, 1.
And they’re convinced that this is where God wants them to be. They still have to find a house and settle in, but Jason said they’ve already found a home at Prestonwood.
“And I plan on being here a very long time,” he said.
